Sun apologises to Cheryl Cole over Ashley break-up story

Press Complaints Commission steps in after Scottish Sun fabricates Cole story

The Scottish Sun has apologised to singer Cheryl Cole over a 4 March story in which the paper reported that the singer would fly to meet her ex-husband, who was sending her text lines from her songs.

The apology came after the Press Complaints Commission negotiated with the paper over the story, following a complaint under Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the PCC's Editors' Code of Practice.

The paper's Scottish edition had published a clarification on page 2 on 16 March saying that Cole did not fly to France and no texts were sent as reported.

The apology, which also appeared on page 7 of the London edition, read: "We are happy to set the record straight and apologise to Cheryl."

The paper also apologised for quoting Cole as saying that she was scared of life as a single girl, in its 1 March edition.
