Independent hires Julie Burchill for exclusive column

Bestselling novelist and longstanding columnist is to write an "exclusive" weekly column for the Ind

The Independent has hired columnist and novelist Julie Burchill to write an exclusive weekly column, the Guardian has reported.

The Independent said it has contracted Burchill on an exclusive basis though she has been writing for papers such as the Sun, the Times, the Daily Mail and the Observer.

Burchill is famous as a novelist for writing the 1989 bestseller "Ambition". She has also worked as a columnist for the Guardian and the Times.

Burchill has been quoted as saying that writing for the Independent is both exciting and challenging. She said she "doesn't exactly agree" with the Independent's editorial stance on "certain issues" but values the paper's support for free speech.

Burchill's recruitment follows the appointment of the former Times executive Ann Sieghart to write a weekly political column for the Independent.
