Sunday Mirror journalist arrested in Cape Town

Simon Wright is held on charges of aiding a fan's entry into the England dressing room.

Simon Wright, a journalist with the Sunday Mirror, was arrested Tuesday at the Cape Town international airport on charges of aiding a fan's entry into the England dressing room, following the England versus Algeria match.

Brigadier Sally de Beer of the South African Police Service said Wright was produced in a World Cup court in Cape Town the same day and granted a 3,000 rand bail. His passport was seized. He will again appear in court on charges of 'defeating the ends of justice' and flouting the immigration act.

The fan, Pavlos Joseph from south-east London, claimed he was charged with trespassing as he walked into the dressing room while looking for a toilet.

The National Commissioner of Police, General Bheki Cele, said they have proof that Wright orchestrated the entire incident. CCTV footage showed him interviewing Joseph while police were searching for him. He had also booked hotel accommodation for Joseph using a false identity.
