Richard Desmond, owner of the Daily Express and the Daily Star, has said he has the money and the readiness to buy the Sun tabloid.
Talking about the possibilities of consolidation in the British newspaper industry, Desmond told Radio 4's Today programme on Friday that he could run the paper better than its current owner, Rupert Murdoch.
"We would run it in a different manner, which would be more efficient in today's marketplace" said Desmond.
However, reporting the interview on his blog, Roy Greenslade of the Guardian noted that Desmond's comments may not have been too serious. He said the owner of the two popular national titles might face a rather challenging competition hurdle if he were to buy Britain's biggest selling paper.
