Advertising Standards Authority bans Israeli tourism advert

ASA bans ad whose depiction of the Western Wall it says is misleading.

The ad was carried by the UK newspapers and showed images of the Palestinian-run West Bank as part of a package tour for a holiday in Israel. The images also showed the Wailing Wall and the Dome of the Rock, which are in East Jerusalem and part of the disputed Occupied Territories of the West Bank.

The ad claimed one could "travel the entire length of Israel in six hours", and urged tourists to sign up for the trip. Following complaints from viewers, ASA ruled that the advert implied that East Jerusalem, which has been occupied since 1967, was part of Israel.

However, Israel's tourism ministry said though the Western Wall, one of Judaism's holiest sites, is in East Jerusalem, it is a major tourist site for most visitors to Israel and cannot be excluded from the advertisement.
