Spanish High Court acquits five newspaper executives of Basque daily from charges of belonging to th

The Egunkaria newspaper was closed down in 2003 over its alleged links to ETA, the armed separatist group. The court has now ruled that the executives, including paper's editor-in-chief, Martxelo Otamendi, had no connection to ETA.

A lower court acted on complaints from associations representing ETA victims about the five executives maintaining financial links with the group.

The High Court has ruled that the order to close the newspaper lacked enough legal basis and may have violated the constitution. The five defendants denied any allegiance or links to ETA.
