Freelance journalists to strike on 1 April

Freelance journalists will strike unofficially on 1 April to protest falling rates and reduced right

The strike will be organised by journalist Liz Hodgkinson, who has worked for the Sun, the Daily Mail and the Times.

She has urged fellow freelancers to abstain from work and meet at the Harrow Pub in Whitefriars St, London, at 12:30 pm.

The journalists are likely to discuss the cuts in freelance rates, such as those introduced by News International in January 2009. They will also discuss being deprived of their rights by publishers.

The strike is not backed by the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) or any other union.

Hodgkinson believes the writers' strike could help in building confidence of freelancers.
