Guardian hits back at rivals' comments

The Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger has hit back at the Independent and The Times in a priv

He was reacting to the two papers' remarks about the state of the Guardian press.

Against a backdrop of several newsroom cuts at Guardian, the planned exit of its CEO to Easy jet and the paper's views on paywalls, the Independent reckoned Rusbridger's judgement to be "flawed" and questioned the group's extravagant expenditure. News Corp's The Times also said the Guardian is "in turmoil".

In the private memo, Rusbridger accused the two papers of envy, of having divided staff, of not having belief in the web and of experiencing same rates of decline as other papers.
