1 Does art make a difference?
Without a doubt. Art exercises the muscle that allows us to see objects and life as portals into the human spirit.
2 Should politics and art mix?
Yes, in the same way as vodka and vermouth – with art being the vodka.
3 Is your work for the many or for the few?
It is for anyone who will take it.
4 If you were world leader, what would be your first law?
The separation of church and state. I was brought up a Christian, and I am certainly not against the Christian faith. However, I firmly believe that faith and politics should be kept separate.
5 Who would be your top advisers?
My dogs, who bring me so much pleasure and inspiration. The Dalai Lama is an intelligent and impressive person. And the homeless, who have so much to teach us.
6 What, if anything, would you censor?
My mind.
7 If you had to banish one public figure, who would it be?
I wouldn’t banish anyone, only to the classroom. The idea of banishing someone goes against what I believe in. I’d much rather try to educate those I find abhorrent.
8 What are the rules that you live by?
I have three rules: 1) To follow my instincts. Over the years, I have learned this usually brings out the best results. 2) In the words of Harold and Maude, one of my favourite films of all time, to “aim above morality”. Every time I watch that film I learn something new. 3) To try to see the opposing truth in everything.
9 Do you love your country?
I do. Both Canada, which is my birthplace, and also the United States, where I have made my home for the past 15 years.
10 Are we all doomed?
Absolutely not. Even with everything that is going on in the world, I try to retain a positive outlook.
