1 Does art make a difference?
It certainly does in my life. The movement in a sculpture, a film’s lingering air, or a hurried stencil on a wall can click something and bring on a new season in me.
2 Should politics and art mix?
It depends what your political views are and whose art it is. Art can bring us forward, shed light on matters and inspire us to think for ourselves. It can help us carve the kind of world we would rather inhabit.
3 Is your work for the many or for the few?
It is what it is. On the surface, it is for the relatively few. It’s not going to leap out and shout at you from the radio, during a film or on the CD your mate made you for your birthday.
4 If you were world leader, what would be your first law?
Free “green” travel, anything from air to sea. I’d need to figure out how to make it green first.
5 Who would be your top advisers?
Everyone! I’d set up a world wish-list poll on the internet and draw up a direct link from all the votes to create a world list of things to do.
6 What, if anything, would you censor?
Automated phone calls that intrude on you in your home. I really hate that.
7 If you had to banish one public figure, who would it be?
I was scratching my head for an answer, and my Australian mate Justine suggested John Howard as “he’s a right bleepin’ b*s*a*d”.
8 What are the rules that you live by?
On a good day, I’ll eat healthily, have good conversation, make some headway with the universe and our place in it, do something physical, laugh, get creative, keep in contact with friends and family, do something for someone else. In short: be good to your body, brain and planet, and they will be good to you.
9 Do you love your country?
Yes, I do. Even for all its flaws, which all countries have, I still so look forward to coming home from trips abroad. We’re a right eccentric mixed bunch, and I miss that most when I’m away.
10 Are we all doomed?
No. We just need better management.
