Young Marble Giants

Published 30 August 2007

Stuart Moxham of the influential Cardiff-based band Young Marble Giants answers our existential questions

1 Does art make a difference?

Art is the other side of the coin from science. One entertainingly reflects the universe; the other measures and utilises it. Art is the one thing that science cannot measure. For me, quality time is visiting galleries and coming out enriched – it’s such a civilising experience. Art puts us in touch with those childhood urges to make something.

2 Should politics and art mix?

Can they be kept apart? What about the politics of art? Art can have power beyond the reach of politicians, even beyond the contemporary. It can be challenging and radicalising. From posters to punk, art plays a major role in political life. Why do political parties employ “creatives” to spread their messages?

3 Is your work for the many or for the few?

I imagine that people either love or hate my stuff and I can see why: I feel both ways about it myself. I do what doubt allows, but I’d never consider writing for any particular group of people – unless the money was right!

4 If you were world leader, what would be your first law?

Practise self-discipline, not self-indulgence, at every possible opportunity.

5 Who would be your top advisers?

God; my father; my friend Diana Makgill; Nelson Mandela; Billy Connolly; and any sane child.

6 What, if anything, would you censor?

The internet – there’s just too much corrupting stuff for children to enjoy illicitly discovering.

7 If you had to banish one public figure, who would it be?

Size zero.

8 What are the rules that you live by?

One day at a time. Don’t do now what you can put off until later. Always have something to look forward to. Count your blessings and give thanks every day.

9 Do you love your country?

Great Britain. I sure do. Wales has a special place just to the left-centre of my chest.

10 Are we all doomed?

Almost certainly, but the point is to grab a little fun and happiness while you can.

An expanded version of Young Marble Giants' 1980 album Colossal Youth was released by Domino in July.
