Over the Great Firewall

Last week, for the first time in its history, the New Statesman was published in Chinese. In an attempt to skirt China’s “Great Firewall”, we created a digital version of Ai Weiwei’s guest edit, uploaded it on to file-sharing sites and encouraged readers to distribute the magazine widely, particularly in China. This version has since been shared around the world, hosted by a variety of sites from popular blogs (Boing Boing, the Daily Dot and Buzz - Feed) to China-based sites such as shanghaiist.com. It has been posted on Twitter and its Chinese equivalent Weibo and we have had reports of it being shared in East Turkestan and by Tibetan activists. It is not often that we ask readers to pirate the magazine. Please keep spreading the word.
