Cameron: the Queen “purred down the line” when I told her Scotland voted No

Um. Like a cat?

A great, if unexpected, scoop from Sky News today – they’ve got footage of David Cameron in New York City for a UN summit on climate change, walking along having a chat with former mayor Michael Bloomberg just within range of a live mic:

The definition of relief is being the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and ringing the Queen and saying ‘It’s all right, it’s OK’. That was something. She purred down the line.”

Leading Channel 4 political correspondent Michael Crick to quip:

Cameron also said he wanted to “sue” the polling companies responsible for his “stomach ulcers, because of what they put me through”. This mole imagines that’s aimed at YouGov in particular, whose 51-49 poll in the run-up to the referendum sent Westminster tizzy.

Nevertheless, the PM faces a rather embarrassing phone call now to apologise, no doubt – though we wonder if Buckingham Palace will deign to let him speak to anyone higher in rank than the palace rat catcher.
