Magazine launches and closures in the US and Canada have fallen this year compared to 2009.

According to data from MediaFinder, a database of US and Canadian magazines, only 176 print titles were launched in the first nine months of the year, compared to 259 last year, while closures simultaneously fell from 383 to 127.

The number of titles moving online-only has also slowed down, from 64 to 26, in the same period.

With 24 new titles this year, food magazines lead the launches, while home magazines and sports magazines have seen the closure of 12 and 11 titles, respectively.

Business-to-business magazines witnessed 44 closures and 29 launches, MediaFinder adds.

According to industry news source Folio, the drop in the number of new magazines could indicate a less-than enthusiastic outlook from existing and prospective publishers.
