The Periodical Publishers Association (PPA) wishes to re-engage actively with the media, publishers and agencies, following a difficult period of inactivity, reports mediaweek.co.uk.

PPA chief executive, Barry McIlheney said chief executives of magazine publishing houses want him "to get out there and start beating the drum again for magazines".

The magazine trade body has started to take steps to increase sales, he added, while speaking at a PPA-hosted meeting of publishing CEOs, senior agency planners and PPA board members on Friday.

The association has revamped its website and plans to investigate how technologies such as the iPad will affect the industry.

One of the largest magazine trade associations in the UK, the PPA in February appointed McIlheney as chief executive to restore its reputation, after a turbulent 17-month phase which saw the resignation of major association executives.

Matt Teeman, chairman of the PPA marketing board and director of advertisement sales at BBC Magazines described the time as "a long period of inactivity". He signalled the start of a more communicative approach by the trade body.
