Magazine publishers in the US have said they are opposed to an emergency plan by the United States Postal Service to hike postage rates, reports the New York Times.
The Postal Service - set to lose about $7bn this year - is expected to ask the Postal Regulatory Commission for a new price structure. It reasons that the current rates paid by customers such as periodicals do not cover the actual cost of mailing.
However, the Magazine Publishers of America says it will take legal action against the move, which makes a "tremendous difference" to their business.
The NYT observes that the prospect of increased postage costs is a difficult one for many magazines just as they are trying to steady their businesses. The US consumer magazine industry has seen a decline in print ad and circulation revenues over the past year.
Publishers say a hike in postage will force them to absorb the cost, or to raise newsstand and subscription rates - neither of which they are keen to do, adds the report.
