National Geographic reshuffles photography team

Former creative director becomes executive editor in charge of bringing content to the web.

The National Geographic magazine has appointed Director of Photography David Griffin as the new executive editor of electronic publishing for National Geographic and National Geographic Traveler magazines.

Griffin will be responsible for bringing print publication content to the web and mobile platforms, including the Apple iPad.

He has been with the American science and nature magazine since 1989 and was the creative director for five years at the US News & World Report.

Kurt Mutchler, who had been leading National Geographic's photo-editing team, will succeed Griffin as the executive editor of photography.

National Geographic Society president of publishing John Q Griffin and editor-in-chief Chris Johns said that Griffin's and Mutchler's new roles will help the magazine sustain its visual storytelling style.
