French food critics have criticised the UK's Restaurant magazine for giving short shrift to French restaurants in its S Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants list.
Chef Rene Redzepi's Nordic restaurant Noma in Copenhagen was rated the best in the world. Restaurants in Britain, Spain, the US and Italy bagged the other places in the magazine's top ten list.
Jean-Claude Ribaut, the restaurant critic for French newspaper Le Monde, said the list only featured the best-known restaurants, not the best. He called the list a farce and a swindle. Ribaut criticised the magazine's method of ranking the restaurants. The rankings were based on the number of critics who cite a restaurant's name.
French food writer Francois Simon of Le Figaro called the list idiotic. "There is no such thing as the best restaurant in the world," he said.
