Online directory of newspaper libraries worldwide soon

The International Federation of Library Association (IFLA) has said it is developing an online directory of newspaper libraries worldwide with country-specific listing.

Libraries, IT companies and governments must partner with each other to preserve valuable print and digital newspapers content, the IFLA said at a three-day newspaper conference in New Delhi, India.

The conference on 'Digital preservation and access to news and views' featured 220 delegates and national library heads from ten 10 countries, including participation from leading national libraries and newspaper libraries and archives from US, UK, France, Germany, Finland, Australia, South Africa and Singapore.

Conference director Ramesh Gaur said similar efforts in Germany, Australia and the US have been successful and allowed for universal access to information.

The conference asked national libraries and state public libraries to share technical resources and digital archiving software with smaller libraries, including newspaper libraries.
It asked the IFLA to develop a digital archiving software package that would help newspaper libraries and other organisations in preserving news resources.
