About 170,000 copies of the Mingguan mStar were distributed free with the Sunday Star. The weekly will be available only in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam and Putrajaya.
The launch came after the Malay press was criticised for its racial tone. Malay is the official language of Malaysia.
Political analyst James Chin hopes that the paper, owned by the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), one of the parties of the ruling Barisan National (BN), will offer a balanced view even as other Malay papers focus on racial issues. The opposition, however, says it will end up like any other mainstream regional newspaper.
