Intransigent Trimble

I can only assume, from his apologia for unionist intransigence in implementing the Good Friday Agreement, that John Lloyd has become David Trimble's official spin-doctor ("Trimble prepares for his final stand", 5 February).

Trimble's difficulties stem from the crude demagogy he employed to gain the leadership of the Ulster Unionist Party. He now finds it hard to sell a compromise deal to the fanatics he is unfortunate enough to lead. It is high time Trimble faced down the oppositionists in his community and started living up to his Nobel peace prize.
