The Government expects doctors to be businessmen. In the last 10 years, the inception of internal market reforms has caused doctors to move towards a more business way of thinking. A doctor who works with primary care groups will have contact with the macro end of health service where a degree of business acumen is necessary. At a base level, Doctors deal with a wide range of jobs eg. employment of staff and salary, budget, change of premises etc. In the General practice, the GP is the archetypal small businessman. Doctors should be taught managerial skills as part of their medical degree – or at least be offered some degree of managerial training during university.
