Is a publicly funded NHS an unrealistic idea?

Parents of this topic:
Taxes fund our health service, yet in the language of most politicians, the NHS has become a bottomless pit that public money cannot adequately resource. Governments abroad fund health systems through taxation alongside private health insurance. In the USA, more than half the money spent on health is from the private sector. Would a similar system in this country compromise the idea of free health care for all? Or are we ideologically unrealistic?
