UK doctors are conservative prescribers

Dr Trevor Jones, Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry
Monday 4th February 2002
Parents of this message:
Should doctors have the freedom to prescribe what they like to a patient regardless of price or political sensitivity?
The more medicines there are, the greater choice the physician has in choosing the most appropriate treatment for the individual patient. There is no way that "one size fits all" can work with healthcare. However, it is true that, in the UK, doctors are more conservative prescribers than elsewhere - fewer new medicines are prescribed in Britain than in the rest of western Europe. Conversely, some 60 per cent of prescriptions are written generically - for medicines out of patent that are, by definition, at least 10 years old.
