In a recent survey of 4,000 GPs, 75 per cent had been physically or verbally attacked by patients. This is on top of the daily grind of abuse that many GPs endure every time they fail to meet the unrealistic demands of patients. As one GP said: ‘We are expected to deliver healthcare like a pizza’. The NHS cannot meet every need and want. The public has to be educated to use services more effectively and politicians have to start the debate about which treatments can no longer be provided by the NHS.
