During the Second World War, the novelist J B Priestley was seen as the national voice of common sense. A regular contributor to the New Statesman, he wrote perceptively about the British popular mood. In this wartime article, Priestley identified a growing resentment among railway users over the distinction between first- and third-class seats. In their irritation, he saw an expression of changing attitudes towards the concept of “class”

Taken from The New Statesman 29 March 1958

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament's first big march took place over Easter weekend in 1958. Thousands walked from central London to the Aldermaston nuclear facility in Berkshire in protest at the existence of nuclear bombs. The creation of the largest mass movement in British history since the Chartists had been inspired by an article in the New Statesman the previous November. In this follow-up piece, J B Priestley reported on CND's astonishing growth.

Selected by Robert Taylor

Taken from the New Statesman archive, 23 August 1963.

Even in 1963, it seems, commercialisation and psychological overcomplication were putting young men and women under unwelcome pressure when it came to sex, and Americans apparently bore a good share of responsibility. The "recent events" which prompted these thoughts, however, were British: the Profumo affair. Priestley (1894-1984) was a New Statesman contributor over several decades.

Selected by Brian Cathcart
