They have paid £650m for 335,000 claims that arose from damage caused by the exceptionally cold days from 18 December to 13 January, BBC has reported.
According to the trade body, Association of British Insurers (ABI), which represents 90 per cent of the insurance market, a huge chunk of the payout - about £395m - went to motorists who damaged their vehicles on slippery roads. Many of the 268,400 motor insurance claims related to accidental damage caused to vehicles.
Homes and businesses also reported damage to insurers due to the extreme weather.
There were also 66,600 claims from home and business owners for damage to property - double the number of weather-damage claims insurers expect during this period every year.
These claims accounted for a payout of £255m, of which £194m was for damage to homes. Many of the 60,200 claims arose as a result of roof damage.
The ABI said that insurers have paid out nearly £1bn to customers following bad weather this winter. January this year was the eighth coldest on record and the country's worst since 1987.
