Mumsnet withdraws support from coalition proposal

Influential forum Mumsnet has withdrawn its support for web filters.

Mumsnet, the influential web forum, has withdrawn its support for the coalition's proposed web filters.

The influential lobby group initially supported the proposals, which would force internet service providers to censor the web, thus preventing children from accessing pornography online.

Talks with Internet Service Providers had been held by the government to look at measures which could increase internet filters with the aim of protecting children online.

Mumsnet had initially backed the campaign, and had uploaded a message of support to its website.

This was later removed after complaints by members of the lobby group criticising the proposal.

It was argued that putting responsibility in the hands of providers was a promotion of censorship and would also shift responsibility from parents.

Mumsnet is currently reconsidering its stance on the issue via consultation with forum users.
