Gulf oil spill and World Cup among Yahoo's most searched terms in 2010

Celebrities dominated the top ten list

The Gulf of Mexico oil disaster was the most searched term on Yahoo in 2010, followed by the FIFA World Cup, the search engine company said on Wednesday.

People who surfed the web to watch the live feed of the oil leak, searched for answers to the spill's impact and to get more details, Yahoo said while announcing its top trends of the year looking at search terms.

Many users asked questions about the rules of soccer and logged on to Yahoo to identify the annoying sounds coming through Vuvuzela horns, Yahoo added.

Apple iPhone and the TV talent show "American Idol" also ranked among the most searched items.

Pop singers Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber came in the top 10.

On Tuesday, Microsoft's search engine Bing released its list of "most searched terms" and said that celebrity news is the most popular search on Bing this year.
