Former US presidential candidates Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin are "idiots trying to make a name," WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange charged on Wednesday.
Assange was apparently angry that the duo called for the execution of those who leaked secret US documents to his whistleblower site. He told MSNBC cable television in an interview that people calling for violence against him should be prosecuted for incitement to murder.
Assange said the world was facing "a new type of digital McCarthyism that is being pushed from Washington" in an attempt to curtail his site's reporting. He dubbed US Army Private first class Bradley Manning, the soldier suspected of helping WikiLeaks, a "political prisoner".
Responding to allegations that WikiLeaks was a terrorist organisation, Assange said no one has ever been physically harmed by the site's release of the secret documents.
