No plans for a social network now, says Google

Digital giant deems rumoured name, Google Me, as "awful".

Google has no plans to launch a social network like Google Me, the search company's head of mobile product management Hugo Barra said on Thursday.

"We are not working on building a traditional social network platform." Google considers 'social' as an ingredient rather than a vertical platform, he added.

Talking at the Monaco Media Forum on the impact of mobile apps on the desktop web, Barra added that although Google was working on developing social apps, it is not focussing on any specific new social network.

The rumoured name, Google Me, is "awful", he said, while denying Google's plans for a Facebook rival.

In September, Google chief executive Eric Schmidt said that the company planned to add "layers" of social networking to its sites rather than unveil a flashy product.

However, internet companies continue to speculate on Google's social network that will reportedly take on social networking site Facebook.
