Mobile Applications to provide rapid revenue growth to publishers

Most reject the idea of moving to an all-digital format

Mobile applications are poised to bring rapid revenue growth to publishers in the next few years, two new publishing surveys have predicted, even as most publishers tend to reject a switch to an all-digital format.

The Audit Bureau of Circulations and ABC Interactive, in its second annual Going Mobile Survey, pointed out that 65 per cent of respondents agreed that digital delivery is important to their strategic future.

Moreover, 37 per cent of respondents expected mobile applications to increase their revenue over the next two years. However, 78 per cent of respondents denied that their publications would switch to an entirely digital only format within the next five years.

The ABC survey gave the number one spot in the e-reader manufacturers segment to Apple, but only 19 per cent of respondents said they were satisfied with Apple's application business model. Eleven per cent said they are satisfied with Apple's analytics and subscriber information.

Mobile ad network Millennial Media, e-media conference producer DIGIDAY and financial services company Stifel Nicolaus conducted another survey which found out that 31 percent of publishers surveyed expect their applications to increase 100 per cent or more in 2011.
