Facebook entitled to ‘Face’ trademark, says US patent office

Trademark would only apply to Facebook's business "as a provider of telecommunication services"

The US Patent and Trademark Office on Tuesday said that Facebook is entitled to a trademark on the word "Face".

However, the trademark would only apply to Facebook's business "as a provider of telecommunication services, namely providing online chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among computer users in the field of general interest and concerning social and entertainment subject matter."

To get the final approval, the social networking site now has to file a "Statement of Use" that states that it will use the trademark in commerce.

Facebook had faced problems with companies which it considered have tried to piggyback on its popularity. In August, the company sued Teachbook, a social network for teachers; Faceporn in October; and earlier this month, it had sued Lamebook, a parody of Facebook.

Facebook is also reportedly trying to get the trademark on the word "book", which a North Carolina corporation currently holds.
