Tablets led by iPad cannibalise PC sales

Long term, tablet computers are expected to displace around 10 per cent of PC units by 2014

The rising popularity of tablet computers led by the Apple iPad is negatively affecting global PC sales, the latest report released by research firm Gartner said on Monday.

PC shipments are now expected to reach 352.4 million units in 2010 -- a 14.3 per cent increase over 2009 figures, but down from Gartner's original expectation of 17.9 per cent growth.

Gartner, which previously anticipated 18.1 per cent growth in PC sales for 2011, has revised the figure to 15.9 per cent.

In the long term, tablet computers are expected to displace around 10 per cent of PC units by 2014, Gartner research director Ranjit Atwal said in a statement.

The firm also sees next-generation smartphones and other devices also negatively impacting the growth of the PC market.
