Twitter, Skype appoint name new chief executives

Dick Costolo became head of Twitter, while Skype hired Tony Bates.

Twitter and Skype announced new chief executives on Monday. While the microblogging site appointed Dick Costolo, the internet voice call provider has hired Tony Bates.

The appointments are part of a push towards becoming more business savvy and with an eye on further revenue generation, the Financial Times reported.

Costolo, who joined Twitter as the chief operating officer a year ago, will succeed its co-founder Evan Williams. Williams will reportedly focus on product development now.

In a company blog post, Williams credited Costolo with generating revenue through advertising, as well as "making the trains run on time in the office".

Skype's Bates, a native of UK who supervised Cisco's enterprise, commercial and small business division, reportedly never graduated from college.

He is known to have contributed to one of the crucial formulas governing how internet traffic is moved about, known as the Border Gateway Protocol.

At Cisco, Bates was in charge of the switching and routing business as well as the collaboration and increasingly important data centre offerings.
