Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's Twitter account hacked

Three tweets from the Venezuelan President's accounts were not written by Chavez.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's Twitter account has been hacked, interior minister Tareck El Aissami said on Saturday.

The account had shown "irregularities" since 22 September and at least three messages from the @chavezcandanga account were not written by the Venezuelan leader, El Aissami said.

The minister said that the account was being fixed so that the president could keep sending messages on the eve of elections to Venezuela's National Assembly this week.

The country's officials have sought help from the US for an investigation into the hacking, he added.

Chavez receives hundreds of Twitter messages daily and has more than 850,000 followers. He started his account on the microblogging network in April this year.
