North Korea wages social media war against South

Satirical video clips and posts are fuelling a Korean Youtube and Twitter war

North Korea has taken its propaganda war against South Korea and the US on to YouTube and Twitter, The New York Times reported on Monday.

Last month, North Korea posted a few satirical and vitriolic video clips against leaders in South Korea and the US on the video sharing site. It also opened a Twitter account under the name uriminzok, or "our nation", last week.

Both the Twitter and YouTube accounts are owned by a user named "uriminzokkiri." The website www.uriminzokkiri.com is run by the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea, a propaganda agency in the Northern capital of Pyongyang.

Bloomberg quoted a spokeswoman for the Unification Ministry in Seoul, South Korea - which works towards the reunification of Korea - as saying that South Koreans who post comments on the alleged North Korean Twitter account may be violating the security laws of their land by communicating with their Cold War foes.

The spokeswoman also said the ministry has not been able to find out who operates the online accounts.
