About 93 million users visited Twitter in June, an increase of 109 per cent from the previous year, according to the latest data from web analysis firm comScore.
The data is based on visits to the Twitter website, rather than access from third-party applications.
The study found that in June, Indonesia reported the highest penetration, with 20.8 per cent of internet users in the country visiting the microblogging site that month, followed by Brazil and Venezuela.
The Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's decision to join Twitter in late April contributed to the increase in numbers, comScore added.
Growth was slowest in North America, at 22 per cent year on year, where Twitter is already popular. Latin America saw traffic to the site increase 305 per cent and Asia Pacific witnessed 243 per cent growth.
In New Zealand, 7.5 per cent of web users accessed the site, compared with 10.9 per cent in the UK and 11.9 per cent in the US.
