Angelina Jolie joins Twitter for charity reasons

Star aiming to promote humanitarian causes through microblogging site.

Hollywood actress and UN goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie has joined Twitter, but her account has been "locked" and is currently not accepting any followers.

The actress reportedly signed up for the account @angelinajolie so that she could own the username and tweet "for charity-related items," according to US Weekly.

The Twitter account is expected to be helpful in spreading awareness of Jolie's charity, as her support of an institution would likely lead many people to follow suit.

Jolie promotes humanitarian causes and is noted for her work with refugees as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Most recently, along with her partner Brad Pitt, she donated $1m to relief efforts in Haiti after it was hit by a devastating earthquake in 2010.
