Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive and co-founder of Facebook, is facing a police investigation for blasphemy in Pakistan, BBC Urdu reported Thursday.

Police in the country's Punjab province have confirmed they have initiated formal proceedings against the owner of Facebook.

Last month, the social networking site featured a page that invited users to post drawings of the Prophet Muhammad. Islam considers any drawings of the Prophet as blasphemy.

According to the Pakistani newspaper the News International, a Pakistani High Court judge asked for police action after lawyer Muhammad Azhar Siddique filed a First Information Report claiming that Facebook had committed a heinous and serious crime under Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The Section says that defiling the sacred name of the Holy Prophet shall be punished with death or imprisonment for life and a fine.
