British Library to digitally archive 40 million pages of newspapers

The archive contains over 52,000 local, regional, national and international newspaper titles.

The British Library over the next decade will digitise 40 million pages of newspapers spanning 300 years from its archive, and make them available online.

Its archive at Colindale in north-west London contains over 52,000 local, regional, national and international newspaper titles.

The library is partnering with online publishing service Brightsolid for the project that will cost millions of pounds.

Web users will be able to access the archives through websites run by Brightsolid, for a fee.

The project will focus on special events such as the Boer War and the Crimean War and periods such as the census years from 1841 to 1911.
