Newspapers can make profits online, says Google CEO

Titles must tap into the vast scope of the internet to make money, Eric Schmidt has said.

Schmidt made the statement to a group of editors while addressing the annual conference of the American Society of News Editors in Washington.
Schmidt said Google recognized newspapers as "fundamental" to democracy.

He also predicted that the newspaper business could formulate a new revenue model based on advertising and subscription revenue. The Google CEO added that newspapers could tap online technology to engage readers.
