Twitter to offer Chinese version soon

Founder confirms that the microblogging site will offer a Chinese version soon but did not commit on

Jack Dorsey cited political and technological problems such as getting universal support for Chinese characters via phone SMS and piercing through the Great Firewall as the reasons preventing the service from starting in China, according to a report in the Associated Press.

Chinese social activist Ai Weiwei said Twitter was a very important part of the future of China. The country has practically forbidden a free flow of information and censors search engine results. "At 140 characters, in Chinese, you can really write a novel. You can discuss most profound ideas really to democracy, freedom, poetry," Ai Weiwei has been reported as saying.
