It has urged the Commission to ask the search engine company to make Buzz, its social networking tool, a fully opt-in service and to cease using Gmail users' private address book contacts to compile social networking lists.
Google's Buzz is associated with its Gmail service. The company uses the contacts in a person's address book to create an immediate social network for Buzz, a networking tool similar to Facebook and Twitter.
"Google Buzz still allows people to automatically follow a user," the EFF said. "The burden remains on the user to block those unwanted followers." It also said that Google does not clearly state that the profiles that Buzz users set up are public.
In a statement, Google said that the company welcomes suggestions to improve the Buzz experience.
