China sets new rules for website registration

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said that new website operators will also have to submit their identity cards and photographs before their sites could be registered.

The ministry said it is taking these measures to fight online pornography. However, online activists believe it is an excuse to increase government censorship of websites. A number of websites are now being registered overseas to avoid China's controls.

The ministry, which stopped registering new sites in December, has announced that it has now started accepting applications for registrations.
