Biogen Idec Inc. (Biogen) is a biotechnology company, involved in the development, manufacturing and commercialization of novel therapies used in the areas of oncology, neurology, immunology and cardiology. The company operates in more than 90 countries worldwide and principally operates in Canada, Australia, Japan and Europe. Biogen has 47 subsidiaries. The company is headquartered in Massachusetts, the US.Recently, Biogen Idec and Swedish Orphan Biovitrum restructured the collaboration agreement for their long-acting, recombinant Factor VIII Fc fusion protein (rFVIIIFc) in hemophilia A patients and the recombinant Factor IX Fc fusion protein (rFIXFc) in hemophilia B patients. The company also entered into a licensing agreement with Trillium Therapeutics, a biopharmaceutical company, to obtain exclusive worldwide rights of one of Trillium's development programs for clinical development, regulatory approvals, manufacturing and commercialization. Genentech and Biogen received the FDA approval for updated Rituxan prescribing information to include retreatment in RA patients with an inadequate response to TNF therapies. The company commenced a tender offer to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Facet Biotech Corporation, a biotechnology company, for a purchase consideration of $14.50 per share in cash.The company reported revenues of (U.S. Dollars) USD 4097.5 million during the fiscal year ended December 2008, an increase of 29.2% over 2007. The operating profit of the company was USD 1153.3 million during the fiscal year 2008, an increase of 52.7% over 2007. The net profit of the company was USD 783.2 million during the fiscal year 2008, an increase of 22.7% over 2007.
