Barbados Light and Power Company Limited
The Barbados Light & Power Company Limited (BL&P Co.) is a electricity utility providing company. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Light & Power Holdings. It is principally engaged in generating electricity through diesel, steam turbine and gas turbine power plants located at Spring Garden, Garrison and Seawell. As of the fiscal year end 2008, the company has an installed generation capacity of 239.1 MW. In 2008, it generated 1,053.7 Gwh of energy as compare to 1,049.2 Gwh in 2007. Of this about 301.0 Gwh of energy is sold to 99,000 domestic customers and 643.0 Gwh is sold to 19,798 commercial customers. The company maintained its load factor at 73.1%.
In addition, BL&P Co. is also engaged in the transmission and distribution of the electricity at 24,900 or 69,000 volts from the generating stations to substations located throughout the island. The company is also currently undertaking installation of new 24,000 and 132,000 volt underground cables along the Ronald Mapp Highway. BL&P Co also offers various electric services including street light installation, two wire services, three wire services, high voltage services, secondary voltage power (SVP) and large power service. In 2008, the company installed over 28,101 streetlights.
During 2008, the company achieved Quality Management certification under the ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management standard. Additionally, The company is planning to introduce wind energy into its electricity mix. It is also preparing for the interconnection of small, customer owned solar photovoltaic systems into the grid.
