Ovonic Fuel Cell Company LLC (Ovonic Fuel Cell) is engaged in the development and commercialization of the Ovonic Metal Hydride Fuel Cell. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (ECD Ovonics). Ovonic Fuel Cell incorporates patented Ovonic Metal Hydride Fuel Cell technology which provides intrinsic energy storage within the fuel cell stack. This intrinsic energy storage provides for several key performance features ideal for UPS/emergency power applications when compared with the traditional fuel cell technologies, such as instant start, intrinsic operation down to -20 degree centigrade, storage of regenerative braking energy for propulsion applications, operation without hydrogen gas fuel for several minutes. Ovonic fuel cell technology provides a low-cost approach based on Ovonic metal hydride materials and does not utilize expensive noble metals traditionally used as fuel cell catalysts.

The company has been awarded a $400 thousand grant by Michigan Public Service Commission for supporting a nine-month program which is aimed at the development of a prototype fuel cell system for uninterrupted power supply (UPS) and emergency power applications. The company is headquartered at Rochester Hills in Michigan, the US.
