Appalachian Power operates as a subsidiary of American Electric Power. It is engaged in the generation, transmission and distribution of power using hydro energy as its principal resources and coal and natural gas as secondary resource. The company operates 17 power plants with total generation capacity of 8,018 MW as well as 5,360 miles transmission lines and 47,981 miles distribution lines. The company caters to about 1.05 million customers which includes residential (408,771), commercial (70,299), industrial (2,740) and other (935). The company also supplies and markets electric power at wholesale to other electric utility companies and municipalities. It serves various industries, including coal mining, primary metals, chemicals, and textile mill products. In addition to this, the company has a dedicated research and development department to carry out its research and development activities. The company is headquartered in West Virginia, the US.
