Will 3G penetration increase in 2009?
Analyst firm Strand Consult believes that 2009 will be the year when mobile computing undergo an evolutionary advance with the arrival of what it believes will be premium mobile broadband services.
According to International Telecommunication Union, 3G is a family of standards for mobile telecommunications, which includes GSM EDGE, UMTS, and CDMA2000 as well as DECT and WiMAX. Services include wide-area wireless voice telephone, video calls, and wireless data, all in a mobile environment.
ABI Research has said that while the WiMAX market will eventually be dwarfed by the LTE market, there still exists a healthy near-term and long-term market for WiMAX infrastructure, CPE, and devices.
Analysts think that growth of 3G in emerging markets like India and China will progress in 2009 and continue to expand further in 2010. Yankee Group has predicted that the Chinese WiMAX market will reach 8.39m users in 2011, almost seven times the 1.25m users they forecast for 2009 (the first year of significant WiMAX development in China). Some analysts predict that WiMAX market will give tough competition from LTE standard for 4G networks.
